The Northern (England) Soul era began in the late 60’s. Its favs (US vinyl played by British DJ’s) were pulled from more obscure, hard-to-find tracks (by about a hundred artists). They’re based in heavy beats and fast tempos like those of Motown, but without the commercial polish. Early venues include Manchester’s formerly mod Twisted Wheel Club, Tunstall’s Golden Torch the and most famously the Wigan Casino. << BBC article >>
