VID Electronic sounds in early 20th-century Russia

Leon Theremin’s famous electronic instrument was but a hint of the experimenting going on in Russia in the 1910s and 1920s. Andrey Smirnov’s Sound in Z (13m) explains the other experiments that were going on … how that culture was eradicated by the Stalinist state of the 1930s … and other overlooked Russian EM inventions in the USSR.

A related exhibition, Generation Z, Renoise (Russian Pioneers of Sound Art and Musical Technology in the Early 20th Century) assembles rare original early sound equipment and explores the fate of the inventors. It is a part of the giant CTM Festival 2014 (Club transmediale) taking place in Berlin from Jan. 4 to Feb. 2.
