The Canadian music industry hands out its first Juno Awards.
 
When they were first awarded in 1964 they were known as the RPM Gold Leaf Awards; the Canadian music industry magazine was first issued on Feb. 24, 1964.

You Got It

US singer-songwriter Roy Orbison sings on two charting albums at once.
 
From his last album Mystery Girl, international top-10 single You Got It (US#9) is his first top-40 in 24 years. And he sings on the debut Traveling Wilburys album (US#3,UK#16). Orbison had died the previous December 6.
 
The Wilburys album is on the charts for 50 weeks and wins a 1990 Grammy Award.

Santana wins eight Grammys in one night – tying Michael Jackson’s record – for international#1 17th album Supernatural.
 
The Grammys include Album of the Year. On Sep. 13 Carlos and band win 3 more at the 1st annual Latin Grammy Awards.
 
Top singles include Smooth (Song of the Year, 12 weeks at US#1) and Maria Maria (Best Pop Performance, 10 weeks at US#1).
 
The group had already been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
