February 26 – Bizet’s Symphony in C, Thriller

1935

French composer Georges Bizet‘s Symphony in C, written in 1855 when he was 17, is finally heard — two years after it was discovered gathering dust in the Paris Conservatory library.
Symph. in C-Vienna Phil.

It’s delightful; of it Grove’s Dictionary remarks, ‘In quality and craftsmanship it has few rivals’. (The same could be said of Mendelssohn‘s more amazing Octet, written when he was 16.)

Sadly, for him and us, Bizet had not long to live. He went swimming one day in May, 1875, then had two heart attacks. He was 36. He never lived to know the fame of his last and most immortal work, one of the most popular operas, Carmen.
