Rock band Chicago Transit Authority releases its first (eponymous) album, which will rise to US#17.

The album includes single Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? (US#7), written by Robert Lamm.

Soon the band changes its name to Chicago and becomes one of the most successful US pop and rock groups.

Chicago’s next ten albums land in the US top-10; five in a row make US#1 (Chicago V to Chicago IX). Songs from those albums include Saturday in the Park (1972 US#3), Just You ‘n’ Me (1973 US#4), and Old Days (1975 US#5)

The band continues to chart singles into the 1990s, including US#1s If You Leave Me Now (1976, written by Peter Cetera), Hard to Say I’m Sorry (1982), and Look Away (1988, written by Diane Warren).

Release of California pop singer-songwriter Kate Perry‘s single I Kissed a Girl. On July 5 the song , an international top-10 hit, begins 7 weeks at the top of the US charts.

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don’t mean I’m in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it,

It’s from second album One of the Boys(US#9,UK#11), released on June 17, which receives some heavy criticism. It includes single Hot n Cold(US#3), and may or may undo some of the damage done by (included) Nov 2007 single Ur So Gay (Perry is heterosexual). Lyrics

Perry’s next two albums are both international top-5 hits. Third album Teenage Dream, released Aug 24, 2010, tries out a different audience. It’s the second album in history to generate five US#1 hits (after Michael Jackson’s 1987 Bad), despite more critical bile. It wins Juno Award for International Album of the Year in 2011, and seven Grammy nominations.
