US all-time top instrumental
Cuban bandleader Perez Prado(*) steals the airwaves with his mambo instrumental Cherry Pink.
Written in 1950 by Catalan musician Louiguy, it spends 10 weeks at US#1. A mambo dance craze follows. Also in 1955, a vocal version sung by East Coast singer Alan Dale makes US#14, and the song is heard in Jane Russell film Underwater!.
In 1958 Prado lays on another US#1 instrumental, Patricia. His 1949 mambo/jive instrumental Mambo No. 5 becomes a US#1 in 1999!! with lyrics added by Lou Bega.
