June 10 – Gumm, Rainwater, Joplin, Brian Adams, Morning Jacket

Wonderful man too

US country and rockabilly singer/songwriter Marvin Rainwater has a US#18 pop hit (USC&W#5) with ‘Gonna Find Me a Bluebird’.

It sells a million, earns a gold record and inducts him into the 50s US one-hit-wonder club.

The song is covered by Brenda Lee in 1962. A 1957 duet with Connie Francis called ‘The Majesty of Love’ (1957)’ reaches US#93 but is also a million-seller. His rockabilly song ‘Whole Lotta Woman’ was a UK#1 for 3 weeks in April, 1958.

Marvin became another victim of the shady side of the 50s music industry:

They sold a million of my albums at $.88 apiece, and it destroyed my career, my credibility was shot on account of those cheap records, they were demo tapes, not even actual recordings, and they dubbed music in on top of it, got it out of meter….. 1998 MPR interview

He’s also becomes the #73 inductee of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
