July 16 – Mozart ‘Abduction’

1782

Vienna debut of The Abduction from the Seraglio (*), a randy (for the 18th century) opera by Mozart.

It’s a singspiel in German, not Italian … (see the film Amadeus#81 ). ‘Too many notes. Just cut a few and it will be perfect.’ said the Emperor on hearing it. ‘It knocked everything else sideways,’ said Goethe.

‘Serious’ music was, at the time, just breaking away from the control of the church. Which made possible, 170 years later, a duel between Hound Dog vs. (How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?
