A computer game of draughts runs for the first time on the Pilot ACE computer at London’s National Physical Laboratory.
It’s written by Christopher Strachey, a friend of Alan Turing (who designed the ACE). Strachey also wrote one of the first computer music programs.(*)(*) The son of crytographer Oliver Strachey (brother of Lytton Strachey), he eventually becomes the first professor of computer science at Oxford University.
