July 30 – Chris Strachey, Wild Thing

A computer game of draughts runs for the first time on the Pilot ACE computer at London’s National Physical Laboratory.

It’s written by Christopher Strachey, a friend of Alan Turing (who designed the ACE). Strachey also wrote one of the first computer music programs.(*)(*) The son of crytographer Oliver Strachey (brother of Lytton Strachey), he eventually becomes the first professor of computer science at Oxford University. In the US, Arthur Samuel wrote a computer checkers game (*) for the IBM 701 in 1952 at IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Reg Presley and his Brit group The Troggs garner a US#1, UK#2 hit with Chip Taylor song Wild Thing, released on Atco Records and Fontana Records.

The song was previously released by US band Jordan Christopher & The Wild Ones in Nov. 1965 . A now-famous Jimi Hendrix performance is heard at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival , and a 1988 single by Tone Loc (US#2,UK#21) ignites his brief career. . ▷Songfacts▹
