August 5 – Pink Floyd ‘Piper’, Stooges debut

1967

Brit psych rock band Pink Floyd release their first album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. (UK#6,US#131)
 
Syd Barrett alone writes 3 of the 9 tracks. Single See Emily Play makes UK#6. Started in 1964, the band had previously called themselves The Meggadeaths, Sigma 6, The Abdabs, Leonard’s Lodgers, The T-Set, and The Pink Floyd Sound. Waters, Wright and Mason were students at the Regent Street School Of Polytechnics.
 
In following years the band releases 13 further studio albums, nearly all of them international top-10s. 1979 single Another Brick in the Wall:Part 2 (from album The Wall) tops nearly every chart in the world.

1969

Ann Arbor, Michigan protopunk rockers The Stooges, headed by the iconic Iggy Pop, release their eponymous first album, including ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog‘.
 
It’s produced by the iconic John Cale, ex-Velvet Underground. Waaaaaay ahead of its time, it crawls, twists, howls its way to US#106.
 
The band makes two more studio albums Fun House(1970) and Raw_Power (1973) which includes Search and Destroy. Both are very influential and now considered important classics. Live albums follow for years. In 2010 the band is inducted into the Rock HoF.
