August 26 – Marian Anderson, Hey Jude

Privately trained (‘We don’t take colored’ she was told at an all-white music school), world-class contralto Marian Anderson debuts with the New York Philharmonic orchestra.

On January 7, 1955, she becomes the first African-American to perform with the New York Metropolitan Opera.
