September 3 – See You, Sunshine Superman, Tainted Love, Sweet Dreams

1966

Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan Leitch has a US#1 hit with Sunshine Superman. (*)

Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
Could’ve tripped out easy a-but I’ve a-changed my ways
It’ll take time, I know it but in a while
You’re gonna be mine, I know it, we’ll do it in style
‘Cause I made my mind up you’re going to be mine
I’ll tell you right now

It’s one of the earlier examples of psychedelia, with Jimmy Page on guitar. The tune on the flipside? ‘The Trip‘.

Donovan follows up by releasing Mellow Yellow in October; it reaches US#2, UK#8.   Hurdy Gurdy

NJ singing quartet The Happenings single See You In September — on the B.T. Puppy label (Wimoweh!) — peaks at US#3.

It’s a cover of a 1959 Tempos hit heard in the movie American Graffiti.

In 2001, Clear Channel stations pull the song in the wake of 9/11… Believe It or Not.   ( Website

Brit invasion 2 duo Eurythmics (Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart) tops the charts with Sweet Dreams.

(Nice for Stewart: he spent several years living in squats.)

And what a hook: everybody IS STILL looking for something.
