September 4 – Queen’s US debut

1973

British proto-glam rock band Queen releases its self-titled debut album in the US.

Well they say your folks are telling you
To be a super star
But I tell you just be satisfied
To stay right where you are

Keep yourself alive keep yourself alive
It’ll take you all your time and a money
Honey you’ll survive

For 8 months, record companies refused the album; finally Trident Studios released it themselves. Lead singer Freddie Mercury composed five of the ten tracks; lead guitarist and closet-astronomer Brian May contributed four.

Their last, 15th album is released 22 years later. Their 1985 Live Aid performance in Wembley Stadium is named the world’s greatest rock gig in a 2005 industry poll.
