Premiere at NYC’s Alvin Theatre of Ira and George Gershwin‘s American folk opera Porgy and Bess.

Its best-known song is probably Summertime (*). Singer Billy Holiday has a US#12 hit with it in 1936;

over 17,500 recordings are known. Another favorite song is I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’.

English pop rockers Queen release the single version of one of their biggest hits, Bohemian Rhapsody.

It will climb to UK#1 (January, 9 weeks), US#9 (February). It charts again in 1992 following the success of film Wayne’s World.
