November 6 – Them release ‘Gloria’, out come The Pistols

1964

Belfast, Northern Ireland band Them release their song Gloria as a B-side… vocal by 18-year-old songwriter Van Morrison. (live)

It goes to UK#10 in 1965, but — despite having Jimmy Page on guitar — in the US it goes nowhere (US#93 cuz of some lyric objections — e.g. banned by WLS).

Until Chicago garage rock band Shadows of Knight (*)(*) picks it up with a Jan. 31, 1966 release and carries it to US#10 ’65, seaside  … since then, it’s been covered by -everyone- … who can play 3 chords!

If you drop a guitar down a flight of stairs, it’ll play ‘Gloria’ on its way to the bottom. — Dave Barry

It’s heard near the beginning of Francis Ford Coppola‘s 1983 teen angst film The Outsiders — the one with all the unknown kid actors.

1975

Primeval beery British punk band the Sex Pistols,

Sniffin Glue #6

formed as ‘The Strand’ in 1972, plays its first show.

With John Lydon aboard (since August), the killing’s done at London’s Central Saint Martins College where Matlock is a student. The short show consists of covers, but “the plugs were pulled before they finished their set” — by the band whose gear they borrowed. Wot? Cur! Early footage
