US music, politics, pop culture magazine Rolling Stone begins publication in San Francisco as a counterculture magazine.

After 10 years it’s a completely assimilated, slick, neutered rag with no soul. Just like FM radio! But, before it’s borged, it does some -hefty- reporting. ( Website )

Brit rockers Bandfinger release album No Dice. The album includes power pop song No Matter What which reaches UK#5, US#8. It also includes an uninspired performance of Pete Ham/Tom Evans song Without You, which McCartney has called ‘the killer song of all time’.

A 1971 cover by Harry Nilsson for Nilsson Schmilsson (and another by Mariah Carey in 1994) becomes a US (and international) #1 hit. That doesn’t stop the Badfinger tragedy.
