December 6 – Altamont concert, Roy Orbison

1969

Three months after Woodstock, Brit rock band The Rolling Stones play a free ‘thank you’ concert for 300,000 fans at the Altamont Free Concert in Livermore, CA.

It was like an afternoon in hell. — Jerry Garcia

When 18-year-old Meredith Hunter is killed by concert ‘security’ after showing a gun, the supposedly ‘liberal’ media jumps on that to condemn not just the concert, but the whole 60s generation. The concert is portrayed in documentary film Gimme Shelter.

Singwriter-songwriter and rock and roll pioneer Roy Orbison dies of cardiac arrest at the age of 52.

After frustrating years at Sun Records, in May, 1960 his first major (US#2, UK#1) hit Only the Lonely is released by Monument Records. Orbison’s musical skills, vulnerability and string of hits in the 50s and 60s earn him much respect and many fans. The very popular 1988 TV special Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night (and the followup album) showcases that… along with one of the most illustrious backup bands ever assembled.

In his last year he is part of the first album of supergroup Traveling Wilburys. In 2008 Rolling Stone rates Orbison #13 in their list of 100 Greatest Singers.
